About

The aim of Livin’ La Vida LOCAphile is to appreciate the communities of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and Port Coquitlam  in British Columbia, Canada.

LOCAphile? “Many people know what a locavore is (a person who eats locally grown food), but what on Earth is a locaphile? A locaphile is someone who has a love of place, who eats locally and buys locally and who understands and appreciates the importance of community” (Penne Laubenthal). A LOCAphile in our communities here in beautiful British Columbia might enjoy climbing in the Coastal Mountains, fishing in the Alouette, Pitt, and Fraser Rivers, farming their gardens, or feasting on local produce.  It will be fun to find out what else might make aLOCAphile here.

LOCAphile can love what is unique or uniquely done in their community as well as appreciate these qualities anywhere else: “The kind of local we want to meet on the road is someone with a take on the place, a story to tell, a passion or particular expertise – all linked to where we are.”  This traveler is in search of “authenticity” as much as a locavore is in search of pasture-raised meat and heirloom tomatoes (Adam Sachs).

We will seek to avoid being too smug about our locality.  Like folk music, all music is folk music and everywhere is local, it just depends where you and your folks are from.

…. and, speaking of music, here is a YouTube link to Ricky Martin’s Livin’ La Vida Loca.
