Herons Happy Despite Rising Rivers

We are close to surrounded by rivers here in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows – the huge Fraser River, the relatively short and tidal Pitt River, the North and South Alouette Rivers as well as a myriad of creeks, streams, trickles and ditches.  At the moment the waters are rising fast with the annual freshet or melting of the ice and snow both in the mountains and the interior of the Province.  The water is almost tickling the bottoms of the bridges while the width of the water courses stretch further and higher than seems possible.  I am not sure if we are near record levels but it is all very impressive regardless.  With all this water about it seems that the Great Blue Herons are coming closer to our walking paths – to have their pictures taken perhaps? – they are completely at home in our riverine environment.
